"Children are not vessels to be filled, but fires to be kindled."

— The philosophy behind every Curie classroom

Nine Pillars of Learning

Every pillar is woven into daily routines — not taught in isolation, but experienced as a connected, joyful whole.

Science

Children become little scientists — observing, questioning, and experimenting with the natural world through sensory bins, nature walks, and simple experiments.

  • Sink & float experiments
  • Plant life cycles
  • Weather observation journals
  • Color mixing lab

Technology

Age-appropriate introduction to digital tools, coding concepts, and problem-solving through interactive apps, programmable toys, and screen-free coding games.

  • Digital storytelling
  • Interactive SMART boards
  • Screen-free sequencing games

Engineering

Building, designing, and testing — children develop spatial reasoning and persistence through block play, construction challenges, and maker projects.

  • Block & LEGO challenges
  • Bridge-building contests
  • Ramp & marble runs
  • Recycled material builds

Art

Creative expression is at the heart of Curie. From painting and sculpting to dramatic play and music, art develops fine motor skills and emotional intelligence.

  • Watercolor & mixed media
  • Clay sculpting
  • Dramatic play & puppetry
  • Collage & printmaking

Math

Numbers, patterns, shapes, and measurement come alive through hands-on manipulatives, games, and real-world problem solving embedded in daily routines.

  • Counting & sorting games
  • Pattern blocks
  • Measurement with non-standard units
  • Shape hunts

Music & Movement

Rhythm, melody, and movement build phonological awareness, coordination, and joy. Every day includes singing, dancing, and instrument exploration.

  • Rhythm & percussion circles
  • Singing & call-and-response
  • Movement & yoga
  • Instrument exploration

Nature & Outdoors

Our outdoor classrooms and nature walks connect children to the living world, building environmental stewardship and physical confidence.

  • Bug & bird observation
  • Outdoor sensory play
  • Seasonal nature art

Literacy & Language

Rich language environments, daily read-alouds, storytelling, and phonics play build the foundation for lifelong reading and communication.

  • Jolly Phonics daily instruction
  • Phonics & letter play
  • Storytelling & retelling
  • Writing journals

Social & Emotional Learning

Children learn to name their feelings, take turns, resolve conflicts, and build friendships. Social-emotional growth is taught intentionally every day, not left to chance.

  • Emotion identification
  • Turn-taking and sharing
  • Conflict-resolution language
  • Friendship and community building

How We Know Children Are Learning

Assessment at Curie is ongoing, authentic, and always in service of the child — not a test, but a conversation.

Daily Observation

Teachers record what children actually do during instruction, centers, play and routines.

Portfolios & Work Samples

Collected across the year so growth is visible, not just described.

Developmental Checklists

The same tools in every classroom and at both campuses, so progress means the same thing everywhere.

Quarterly Conferences

Teachers share observations and work samples with families, and ask what parents see at home.

Our curriculum is aligned with Virginia's Early Learning and Development Standards.

Intentionally Small Classes

Our classes are intentionally small and always staffed within Virginia licensing requirements. Ask about current class sizes when you visit — we're happy to share exactly who would be in your child's room.

Experienced Educators

Our educators meet applicable Virginia licensing and role qualification requirements and participate in ongoing professional development.
